Description of Play

Gaslight is a thriller written by Patrick Hamilton set in Victorian England in about 1880. The action takes place on the first floor of a four-storey upper middle-class house in Pimlico, a gloomy and unfashionable quarter of London. A husband is slowly manipulating his wife into believing she is going insane. A stranger (retired police inspector) arrives unexpectedly and we learn some sinister truths from the past.

Cast requirements

Mr. Manningham (Jack) Tall and good looking (playing age about 45), moustached and bearded. Perhaps a little too well dressed. He is suave and authoritative but has a touch of mystery and bitterness.
Mrs. Manningham (Bella) (playing age about 34). She has been good-looking, almost a beauty but now she has a haggard, wan, frightened air, with rings under her eyes, which tell of sleepless nights and worse. Ultimately capable of vengeance and hysteria.
Elizabeth Cook and Housekeeper. A stout, amiable, subservient woman of perhaps 50.
Nancy The Maid. A self-conscious, pretty, cheeky girl of 19.
Rough Retired Police Inspector. Middle-aged − greying, wiry, active, brusque, friendly, avuncular and overbearing. He has a low, warm chuckle and completely dominates the scene from the beginning.
Two Victorian Policemen Non-speaking but mildly active parts at the very end of the play (an interesting opportunity for an introduction to live theatre).
